CSS formatting guide

Make stylesheets easier to review

Formatting arranges selectors, declarations, and nested blocks with consistent indentation and spacing. Some browsers and frameworks serve stylesheets written in dense or compressed forms; this tool arranges them so spacing, grouping, and mismatched braces are easier to spot. Format is a syntax-aware printer that leaves your rules otherwise unchanged.

Choose your indentation

The Indentation control selects 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs for output. Changing it does not reformat output already generated; click Format again after switching. Press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on Mac) while working in the workspace to format.

Formatting versus minifying

Format expands declarations, comments, and blank lines into readable vertical structure. Minify strips unneeded whitespace conservatively: it removes the spaces that CSS truly permits between tokens, keeps required spaces where removing them would change meaning, and preserves important comments that begin with /*!. Media queries, keyframes, and nested at-rules are kept intact.

Custom properties and comments

Custom property values can legally contain almost anything, so the formatter does not touch the interior of a custom property. A leading gap after the colon is normalized to one space and trailing whitespace is trimmed. These lines can extend beyond a normal code width on purpose.

Errors you may see

Formatting reports unclosed blocks and stray closing braces. The message includes the line and column of the problem when the parser can pinpoint it. Formatting is not a full CSS validator: it does not check property names, values, pseudo-class support, or whether your browser can apply the result.

Privacy and large stylesheets

Processing happens locally in the browser. CSS input and output are not uploaded, saved to the URL, localStorage, or sessionStorage, and are not included in analytics events. Copy writes to your clipboard only when you click it, and Download saves the browser-generated file locally. Reloading the page clears the workspace.

Large stylesheets use browser memory and may pause the page while parsing. Split very large files when practical. This tool does not load remote resources, resolve imports, or execute CSS.

Frequently asked questions

Does formatting validate my CSS?

No. Formatting reports only the structural problems it needs to print your file, such as unclosed blocks or stray closing braces. It does not check property names, values, browser support, or whether a selector matches anything on your page.

Does formatting change what my stylesheet does?

Formatting is intended to preserve meaning while adjusting indentation, line breaks, and spacing around punctuation. Values such as calc() keep the spaces they need so operators stay unambiguous. If you change output and your layout shifts, test the result in the browsers you support.

Are comments preserved?

Most comments are kept and printed on their own line. Comments that begin with /*! are preserved during minification too; other comments are dropped when minifying so that the file stays small.

Why is a custom property not reformatted?

Custom property values can legally contain nearly any token, so the parser treats the value as opaque. A leading gap after the colon is normalized to a single space and trailing whitespace is trimmed, but the rest of the value is passed through unchanged.

Is minification safe?

Minification removes whitespace conservatively. It keeps the space that separates two identifiers or two values (for example between a vendor prefix and a value), and preserves important comments. It does not rename selectors, reorder rules, or merge identical blocks.

Is my CSS uploaded or saved?

No. Formatting runs locally in your browser. CSS content is not sent to a formatting service or to analytics, and is not saved in the URL, localStorage, or sessionStorage. Copy writes the output to your clipboard when clicked; Download saves a file your browser generates locally.
