Slug generator guide
What a slug is
A slug is the human-readable part of a URL that describes a page, usually drawn from its title or filename. “the quick brown fox” becomes the-quick-brown-fox. Clean slugs are easier to read, share, and remember, and many sites use them in their URL structure for content pages, products, and blog posts.
How this tool normalizes text
Text is trimmed, whitespace collapses to a single separator, and the result is lowercased. Punctuation and symbols act as word boundaries, and apostrophes are removed entirely, so don’t becomes dont and Version 2.0 (beta!) still slugs cleanly. Repeated separators collapse and the output never starts or ends with one.
Unicode handling
Preserve Unicode keeps accented and non-Latin letters such as café, 日本語, or తెలుగు intact and lowercases them where a lowercase form exists. Turn it off to strip every non-ASCII character instead — useful when a system or backend only accepts ASCII paths.
Separators and casing
The separator field defaults to a hyphen and accepts a single safe ASCII punctuation character; unsupported choices fall back to -. Uncheck Lowercase to keep the case of the original text when the destination requires it.
Length guidance
There is no universal limit, but URLs beyond about 2048 characters can fail in older proxies and browsers. The live character count helps you trim long titles before you paste the slug into markup.
Your privacy
Slugs are generated locally in your browser. The text you paste is not uploaded, saved to the URL, localStorage, or sessionStorage, and is not included in analytics events.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good URL slug?
Short, lowercase words joined with hyphens. Use real words instead of random identifiers, keep it under a couple dozen characters when practical, and avoid punctuation, spaces, and stop-word noise that adds no meaning.
Where does my text go when I generate a slug?
Nowhere. Generation runs locally in your browser. Your text is not sent to a server or to analytics, and it is not saved in the URL, localStorage, or sessionStorage on this tool.
Can the slug keep non-ASCII characters?
Yes. Keep Preserve Unicode enabled to retain accented and non-Latin letters such as café or 日本語. Disable it to remove every non-ASCII character, which some ASCII-only systems prefer.
How are apostrophes handled?
Apostrophes are removed entirely rather than converted to separators, matching how most URL systems behave: don't becomes dont and Rock'n'Roll becomes rocknroll.
What separator should I use?
Hyphens are the most common convention for URLs and search-friendly paths. Underscores are fine for filesystem names or tech stacks that prefer them. Pick one and stay consistent across a project.
