.gitignore generator guide
What a .gitignore file does
A .gitignore file lists paths, patterns, and exceptions that Git should not track. It keeps build output, generated files, and local tooling noise out of your repository without deleting anything from disk. This tool composes one from a curated set of patterns that ship inside the page itself.
Templates are local and self-contained
Every template is bundled with this page. Nothing is fetched from GitHub, gitignore.io, or any network resource at build or runtime, and the search box filters the local list only.
Composition rules
Selected templates appear as commented sections in a fixed order, regardless of the order you tick them. Exact duplicate patterns are kept only once, negation rules like !.vscode/settings.json are preserved as written, and custom patterns are appended below a # Custom header with blank lines dropped.
Downloading and naming
Download always saves the file with the exact name .gitignore. Entering a project name adds a prefix — for example techfixgen.gitignore — useful when you manage several repos from one folder. The file your browser generates is plain text.
Keep it reviewed
Generated files are a starting point, not a contract. Review the patterns before committing, and remember that .gitignore does not protect secrets: files that were already committed stay in history, so never rely on it for credentials or keys.
Your privacy
Composition runs locally in your browser. Template choices and custom patterns are not uploaded, saved to the URL, localStorage, or sessionStorage, and are not included in analytics events.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the templates come from?
They are curated and bundled inside this page. The tool never contacts GitHub, gitignore.io, or any other service at runtime, and the search box filters only this local list.
Will the generated file hide all secrets?
No. A .gitignore only stops untracked files from being added. Anything already committed stays in history, so treat generated files as a starting point and never rely on ignore rules for credentials or keys.
How are duplicate patterns handled?
Exact duplicate ignore patterns are emitted only once across the combined file, first match wins, so combining closely related templates (for example Node.js and Next.js) stays tidy.
Are negation rules supported?
Yes. Exceptions like !.vscode/settings.json are preserved exactly as written, and custom patterns you type are appended below a # Custom header.
Is my selection uploaded?
No. Template choices and custom patterns are composed locally in your browser and are not sent to a server or to analytics, and they are not saved in the URL, localStorage, or sessionStorage.
